Ashley’s Bad Day

The breeze ruffled the leaves, so green against the azure sky she barely had a name for the color.  It was a perfect spring day, and she was earning $15/hour pushing a swing in a park.  Life couldn’t be better.  Max leaped off the swing at its highest point, taking Ashley’s heart with him.  She took off after him, to do her best scolding, but a buzzing in her jeans distracted her.  Max used her inattention to escape out of reach.

“Just now?”  Ashley’s face had gone sickly green.  Nodding as if the person on the other end could hear her, she hung up and shoved the phone back into her pocket.  Max’s mom had just been arrested, and now Ashley had to load him in the car and bring him home.
